Join us as we discuss the psychological implications of war and how the actions of its leaders can be related to death anxiety.  

Panelists

Cory Dakota Satter completed his BS in Political Science from Arizona State University and his MA at the University of Bologna in Italy, where he studied International Cooperation on Human Rights. He completed his thesis concerning the security-migration-development nexus the Sahara-Sahel region, and is an incoming PhD student at the University of Florida's Political Science program where he shall continue research on conflict and informal governance dynamics in the West Africa region. Cory's interest in TMT is complimented by his political science background, especially in terms international relations and inter- and intra-state conflict. His other interests are varied, ranging from masculinity studies to sustainable urban planning. In addition to English, Cory speaks Italian and French. He is the author of A Terror Management Theory Approach to Understanding Putin’s Mind

 

 

Sheldon Solomon, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Skidmore College. His research on Terror Management Theory – which examines the effects of the uniquely human awareness of death on behavior – along with that of Jeff Greenberg (at the University of Arizona) and Tom Pyszczynski (at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) has been supported by the National Science Foundation and Ernest Becker Foundation, and was featured in the award winning documentary film Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality. He is co-author of In the Wake of 9/11: The Psychology of Terror and The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life. Sheldon is an American Psychological Society Fellow, and a recipient of an American Psychological Association Presidential Citation (2007), a Lifetime Career Award by the International Society for Self and Identity (2009), the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs Annual Faculty Award (2011), and a Career Contribution Award by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (2021).

 

Moderator

Michael T. McPhearson is a U.S. Army Gulf War Veteran and Human Rights, Anti-War, and Peace Activist. He is currently the executive director for the South Seattle Emerald, an independent online newspaper that amplifies the authentic narratives of South Seattle, bringing coverage to many critical and interesting topics not found in mainstream media. An activist in many other movements for Peace and Human Rights, he formerly worked as the National Coordinator with United For Peace and Justice, and has served as the executive director of Veterans For Peace. In December of 2003, Michael returned to Iraq as part of a peace delegation to examine the state of the occupation firsthand. He has spoken all over the U.S. to small gatherings and large crowds. He has also traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, and Bologna, Italy as a speaker on the U.S. peace movement and world peace.
